Being in the water can have great psychological benefits, as the pool can ‘take you away from it all’ and the feeling of being in the water can be a refreshing, relaxing and liberating experience as the water takes your weight.
Psychological studies have shown that swimmers report significantly less tension, depression, anger, confusion, and they gain more energy than in other types of exercise. This was experienced by both new and experienced swimmers.
Exercise gives you physical benefits like reduced blood pressure, weight loss and improved flexibility.
It also brings psychological benefits such as “I feel better in myself” or “I don’t get so tired anymore".

Activites: StreetGames

What is StreetGames?
StreetGames is an exciting project which offers sports activities for 11-16 year olds. It takes place within local communities and it is totally free of charge. Participants have the opportunity to play a number of games including football, tag rugby, cricket, rounders, volleyball and basketball. All abilities are welcome just turn up and play!!
StreetGames uses a multi sport approach, delivering doorstep sport to disadvantaged communities in an informal way. We work on the principle that all activity is delivered in a style that is relevant to the young people, at a time and place that is convenient for the young people. All activity is chosen following clear communication with the young people taking part.
The target group for StreetGames is 9-16 for delivery and 16-24 to be included as young volunteers supported by the National StreetGames Young volunteer programme. Individual delivery sites may be more specific in the age ranges.
Aims and Objectives
- Increase the activity levels amongst Young People, focusing on the 11-16 age range, thereby enabling the health & social benefits that participation in activity can bring.
- To strengthen pathways to existing sporting opportunities/clubs and identify and investigate development of new sporting opportunities/clubs.
- To remove barriers to participation by providing free activities in locations which are as accessible as possible.
- Increase the opportunities for volunteers to access training and qualifications to assist in the short term and then sustain activity provision in the longer term, thereby enabling community cohesion, inter- generational work, capacity building etc.
- Increase leadership opportunities for participants.
Why StreetGames?
- Informal play to encourage those who would not usually engage with traditional sports activities.
- Drop in sessions giving young people the opportunity to attend whenever they choose to.
All activities are FREE to attend. - Activities are delivered by appropriately trained / checked staff.
- Multi sport sessions catering for all abilities.
- Delivered in the targeted community removing access barriers.
- Longer term giving greater sustainability options.
- Opportunity for 16-25 year olds to volunteer through our young volunteers programme, increasing skills and training therefore longer term employability.
